  14. <p>    RETIREMENT ANNOUNCED. By Benjamin Bradlee, 69, gruff, urbane
  15. executive editor of the Washington Post for 23 years; effective
  16. on Sept. 1, six days after his 70th birthday; in Washington.
  17. Appointed managing editor of the Post in 1965 and executive
  18. editor in 1968, Bradlee aggressively rebuilt the newspaper into
  19. one of the nation's leading dailies. Under his sway, the Post
  20. won 23 Pulitzer Prizes, including one in 1973 for its coverage
  21. of the Watergate scandal. He will be succeeded by Leonard
  22. Downie Jr., who has been the Post's managing editor since 1984.
